Hi, thanks for interested of our gerbils, but i understand that u r getting an Agouti n Lilac from Ricky in LYN right? r u going to breed them? may i know wat sex u r getting from him? and also the age? cos it is not easy to put the gerbils together, if they do not know each others.

nah... I intend to keep them apart. I'm getting a pair of lilac (b&g) from him which i will place in a tank on their own , 7 weeks old. And I'll place your gerbils in another tank .

Iam taking part also to this conversation (I don't mind my own business, heh), and maybe I didn't get the right point.
Aaronoid, are you going to keep those female&male gerbils together all the time? You should know that it's stressfull to female. And gerbils are meant to be couples, not to live alone. And you should read more about genetics, mixing 'that and that' it's not good idea.

Why do you want to breed them? I feel some people doing it to get money loh or wanna see pups..... sigh... it is just not right to breed without knowing the genetics and colour variety. The lilacs you got, I got a feeling they are siblings coz when ricky got them, only Zara had lilacs and no other shop had lilacs. Zara also get from 1 breeder and normally gerbils from a petshop are siblings. And he did mention long time that he got lilac from Zara.
If you have an all male tank then it is ok.... but you making us breeders worry coz you are getting lilacs and agoutis to breed... what are they going to give you? Then later when we breed PEWs, REWs, DEHs, slates and DTW and argentes then you wanna get them and breed on?
Sorry lah.... but we got strict rules on where our gerbils go. Strictly no breeding homes unless the adopter or buyer agrees to follow our breeding plan. I regret giving someone my gerbils.... he has used to breed and never update me on what sex and the genes.... then sold off one of the gerbils I gave him to another person.
We breeders see this as very sad. In the end, gerbils will become spoiled due to careless owners and breeders. Look at the hamster market now, all the breeds and colours all mixed up and one can easily buy a hamster for RM5.... I do not want to see a gerbil drop to RM20 and become rat food one day.

Yes, I do intend to breed them. Why? Because I want the hobby to grow, I do not enjoy a hobby being in a community of 37 people in a forum of only, which a handful are active. Don’t you think it is very disappointing that Gerbils in Malaysia have such a tiny community online? Why?
I came to this forum, expecting hope. But I was really taken back to square one when I told you guys I was taking a pair of boy and girl lilac, I was shot down straight as if I committed a crime. Before getting a pair of boy and girl gerbil, wouldn’t you at least expect me to have already search the net to find as much info about them as I could? Or maybe lets say I’m an un-responsible owner. Lets say I did not bother even spending 5 min reading up about them. Lets say I just got the gerbils without a care in the world with intentions to turn them to breed like hamsters. So what? Would you rather condemn me, where I would most likely shut down my ears to, or would you rather persuade me and guide me? What I feel is that I am being treated as if I am being pre-judged. I feel as if I would be condemned to cause mass destruction to gerbils. Well, what I can say is that humans create self-fulfilling prophecies of other people.
Do you know Pauline Lim? Or Patrick Lee who is a pet importer? They are both Gerbils breeders in KL. I guess, what I am trying to say, there are many other gerbil breeders out there that are hidden. Ricky may not have gotten it lilac from the pet shop as expected, but he may have gotten to other Gerbil breeders. Who knows? Melaka? Johor? Kuantan? There is no way that you can track all Gerbil breeders around Malaysia as there are far to many quiet silent breeders. So screw with having only 3 so call big all mighty breeders in Malaysia, there are more out there. People do not need to get their stock from pet shops; some may have the power to bring them in from overseas, or maybe from other breeders other than you.
I am angry because I was treated as if I was a second kind as soon as I told you guys I got a male and female gerbil. I was treated as if I would breed them with other gerbils to create pariah breeds. Inbreed them, for goodness sake, I not that dumb. This is not the first time I have bred a line of stuff. I am hurt because I treated as if I was pre-judged. Before I could even prove my worthiness of your highness, I was dumped with bomb and bomb that I would be doing something wrong. Maybe sometimes its good to just give a person a chance. I am afraid… I am afraid that Gerbil would just remain as another pet, which has so much potential but just stays so limited. I am afraid that future gerbil breeders would be turned down once more. I am afraid that there would not be a bright future for gerbils in Malaysia. I am worried that gerbils may not have enough breeders to have our very own strong base of resource. For things to happen, we would still need people to help out. The more proper breeders we have, the more we can learn and share. I am worried that these potential breeders are just turned down once more.
I understand that maybe many others have disappointed you or have caused harm to the gerbils. I understand that gerbils are complex and you guys really want to keep track on your gerbils to make sure they stay in good hands. All I ever wanted was to have fun here with you guys. I wanted to learn as much from you guys, but if it at the expense of being treated as a second class… I appreciate your warnings and cautions you guys have given me as they really help me out much. I appreciate you guys taking the initiative to form a forum here and in lowyat. I really appreciate it. I do love this forum you all have created and the information stored in it. I do love the amount of information I am able to find here. Though I’m left feeling disappointed.
P/S - sirus... I intend to keep a all male tank of mix colors , if you'd notice from my earlier post. tq.

I'm glad that you are honest with your words, but remember we are not here to condemn you, its just that with all the pet breeding craze hitting the forums lately, we are wary of people who intend to breed. I mean you remember when you pm me about getting gerbils in the first place? You didnt mention that it was your plan to breed, and you did not announce it in the forum that you were going to breed, so we did not know that it was your intention.... you see some people dont know that the gerbils will breed giving up to 1 litter per month for 1 year+, and will panic and dunno what happen to the pups....we are just concered about the well being of gerbils too, and its worrying that more and more people are jumping into breeding gerbils just like that. Don't worry about there being not enough gerbil breeders.... gerbils are getting popular now and they are selling in all branches of Pets Wonderland even. I just would like to tell you, there is no need to breed agouti x agouti because you will get agouti back even with breeding other colors. We are trying hard to improve the variety of colors in Malaysia instead of remainding mostly in agouti and black. You see if you had made clear you intention in the 1st place then we would not have been so worried, hope you continue to share your intentions with us. Enjoy your stay in the forums

aaronoid,
sorry if there is any hard feeling, but hope u can understand why we r so fussy. n we dont treated u as a second class.
to explain why we r so caution, cos we seldom see u asking question in gerbil forum, then u suddently getting a lilac pair, n want an agouti pair too. to be hourness.. these both pairs are BAD PAIR! they don't give u good colors nor genes. thats y we r worried that u hvn't read enought b4 breeding them.
of cos there r alot of gerbil breeder out there.. but how many of them really know n understand them? how many of them will promote a gerbil n educate others y gerbils r so good|? i do not know any small animal breeder, cos i am not a small animal person, but just fall in love of this litter fela.
we do not want gerbil to follow the way hamster goes, we canot stop ppl from breeding or force ppl to follow us. but we hope ppl will listen n understand.
cos we r not selling our gerbil for profit, n i do love every single pup i hv, its sooo difficult for me to sale them out n make sure they go to good home. n u should know that once our gerbil out, anything goes wrong.. we canot take them back... we will keep blaming ourselve y we don't question more n be more fussy... we r fussy cos we care....
if we don't ask... we dont care... then we can will just post out for sale... whoever want , just sale... but that is not wat we want.
n it make us more worried when u r getting ur gerbils from someone disappointed us. it make us feel very upset.. that make us very worried u may follow his way. maybe u should look around n get ur gerbil from a better breeder...just like u say.. there are alot of them out there....
