Generally, the guide is to look for 1cm gap for metal wheels. I won't recommend plastic ones cos they'll chew em up!

I am sorry, but didn't you know that that wheel is not good for gerbils
And for the difference; rew has darker eyes than pew does. And if you carefully lift gerbil's eyelid, you'll see a blue circle around the eye, if that is a rew.

Gerbils maybe like to, but wheels are not for gerbils. their paws or tail may get stuck and cause injuries. Also their body is not for the wheels, like mice or hamsters. And that wheel in the pic is dangerous.

Maybe its the long nails they have. I also worry for their tail. Today I saw a metal wheel with canvas wrapped around its frame, wanted to buy that but worried they will eat the fabric. in the end bought a plastic one without the spacing in between the wheel n hung it from the tank top, hope they dont chew it or I'll have to remove it.

Well, it's also their body type. Gerbils are not same kind like hamsters and mice, and it's not healthy to gerbils backs to run in wheel. Of course it's better if wheel is 'closed' with canvas or cardboard or something like that. Plastic ones are also dangerous. If gerbils chew it and eat some pieces, thei may cause inside injuries or they may choke to those pieces. This is so hard to explain in english, so try to get the poin.

Exercise Wheel. Do you want to give a wheel to your gerbils? If so, be sure they are big enough (Ø > 17 cm), so that your gerbils don’t have to walk with a swayback. Be sure that you buy a safe wheel, preferably with a closed tread and a closed back, so that the tail cannot get stuck. And you have to check the bar and the standard. Nowadays most wheels have enough space between the bar and the standard. You can check this by yourself. When a pencil fits between the bar, and standard, the wheel is save, because the tail can't get stuck. www.petermaas.nl/gerbils/english.htmAs long as the wheel is big enough and the gerbs dun have to arch their back, the wheel is ok. Only 2 gerbs in my clan loves the wheel..... n they are all gals... for some reason, they boys can't figure them out!
